Epitec is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to join the team behind BigFuture, College Board's platform that helps millions of students explore college, careers, and scholarships. This hands-on technical leadership role involves architecting solutions, mentoring teammates, and building scalable cloud-native applications.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and development of scalable backend solutions in AWS
- Build and enhance student-facing products used by millions of users
- Partner with product owners, architects, and designers to deliver innovative solutions
- Develop modern applications using Node.js, TypeScript, AWS, and React
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical coaching
- Drive engineering best practices, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence
- Help shape and implement Generative AI solutions and engineering standards
Skills
- 7+ years building scalable web applications in AWS environments
- 3+ years of Node.js development using TypeScript
- Strong AWS experience including Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, IAM, and related services
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift, DynamoDB, or other databases
- Generative AI experience such as RAG solutions, LLM-powered applications, chatbot implementations, or model fine-tuning
- Experience with event-driven architectures and asynchronous programming
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and technical architecture experience
- React.js experience
- OpenSearch/Elasticsearch experience
- Experience building highly scalable education, SaaS, or consumer-facing platforms
